There's a sock thief at Rainbow Bridge.

She wasn't really my dog ... well, she was, but her chosen favorite person was my ex-husband, and that was fine ... he loved her very much. And actually, Romi spent most of her life with both of us.

She was a funny little dog. She was an extremely shy puppy ... for some unknown reason people seemed to terrify her. She slowly grew out of that as she got older, but when she was young, each time we had company she spent most of the time hiding under the couch, gaining a reputation for being "that dumb little dog that hides all the time." No one but us saw her cute delightful personality for years, until one day she just suddenly decided, "Hey, people can be fun!" After that, she was very sociable.

She loved stealing socks, underwear, and anything small enough to carry that wasn't nailed down. She once formed a special relationship with one of my furry slippers, which she "denned" with under the couch ... and nobody was getting that slipper away from her! I even got it back once and ran it through the washer ... and as soon as it was back on the floor she stole it back again. She knew which one was hers, too ... she totally ignored the mate.

When my ex and I divorced, he kept Romi, and I moved 1300 miles away with Romi's daughter Kaylee. He and I kept in touch, though, and exchanged pictures of the dogs, and when I visited Illinois I always had to stop by his place to see Romi. She was getting old by that time, but I don't think she ever forgot me. I always missed her, but I knew she had a very good home ... and she was happiest that way. I had to put her happiness first.

She was nearly 16 years old, getting pretty frail, but still seeming in reasonably good health ... till one night I got a call from my ex telling me she had had a seizure that day and he was very worried. The next night he called again, crying, telling me he had had to have her put to sleep, as she had gone into nonstop seizures and he couldn't let her go on like that. I agreed that, considering her age, he had done the right thing. He was with her when she crossed over to Rainbow Bridge.

Romi honey ... I wasn't with you when you left this life, and I'll always regret that bitterly. But I hope you know I always loved you. Your daddy has joined you at the Bridge now and I know you were waiting for him, but I hope you'll have a kiss and a tail wag for me when I come, too. I'll even let you steal my socks if you want. You were always my little Mallo Cup, my little Precious Puppy. I'll never forget you.
